On-site Gas Generation · PSA Technology

Nitrogen Generators N2 Genie Series

Two models covering 100 to 600 LPM — produce high-purity nitrogen on-site from compressed air using pressure swing adsorption. Eliminates cylinders, procurement delays, and gas supply risk permanently. Designed and manufactured in Navi Mumbai.

What is PSA nitrogen generation?

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) separates nitrogen from compressed air using two towers filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS). While the on-line tower produces nitrogen — oxygen and trace gases are selectively absorbed into the CMS — the off-line tower regenerates automatically. The cycle switches between towers continuously, delivering a seamless, uninterrupted nitrogen supply. Nitrogen molecules are too large to penetrate the CMS pore structure, so only oxygen is retained, producing a clean, particulate-free nitrogen stream at the required purity and pressure. The N2 Genie adds Takahe’s in-house developed microprocessor controller, which optimises tower-switching cycles to extend compressor life and reduce running costs over time.

The N2 Genie-2 is built for laboratories running high nitrogen demand continuously — a central nitrogen supply for multiple instruments operating simultaneously, or a single high-consumption application such as a large-format nitrogen evaporator bank or a busy LC-MS suite. At 300 to 600 LPM output, it eliminates the need for multiple cylinders or a bulk liquid nitrogen supply entirely.

The unit ships with an optional receiver tank — horizontal or vertical — that buffers the output and ensures pressure stability under variable demand. This decouples compressor cycling from instrument demand peaks, extending compressor life and delivering a steadier supply pressure to downstream analytical instruments. The larger footprint is offset by the wall-mounting option and the permanent elimination of cylinder logistics.

The N2 Genie-1 is the standard entry point to on-site nitrogen generation — the right choice for a laboratory that currently relies on one or two nitrogen cylinders to supply a nitrogen evaporator, an analytical instrument, or a food packaging line. At 100 to 300 LPM output, it covers the typical nitrogen consumption of a SpeedoVap LV or Bio-eVap evaporator running continuously through a working day.

The compact 24″ × 12″ × 36″ footprint means the N2 Genie-1 fits in a standard instrument alcove or can be wall-mounted to recover bench space entirely. First-time adopters of on-site nitrogen generation consistently report the same experience: a one-time capital investment that pays back within months through the elimination of cylinder rental, procurement time, and the safety overhead of high-pressure cylinders in a working laboratory.

Typical pairing: the N2 Genie-1 is the natural companion to the SpeedoVap LV, Min-eVap, SpeedoVap HV, and SPE systems running nitrogen as the driving gas.

Applications

Where the N2 Genie is used

Nitrogen evaporators

The most direct pairing — the N2 Genie provides a continuous, on-demand nitrogen supply to SpeedoVap, Bio-eVap, and Min-eVap systems, eliminating the need to monitor and replace cylinders between evaporation runs.

Pharma · CRO · Food testing

SPE systems (positive pressure)

The speX Series positive pressure manifolds use nitrogen or instrument air as the driving gas. The N2 Genie-1 provides a reliable, regulated supply at the correct pressure — no cylinder changes mid-batch.

BA/BE studies · Clinical research · Pharma QC

LC-MS and analytical instruments

Mass spectrometers, HPLC systems, and gas analysers require a continuous, clean nitrogen supply for nebulisation and curtain gas. The N2 Genie delivers the required purity without the logistics overhead of cylinders.

API · Research · Forensic · Environmental

Food packaging and MAP

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) for food products requires large volumes of nitrogen at lower purity. The N2 Genie-2 serves food manufacturers and APEDA-accredited labs with the throughput required for production-scale packaging lines.

Food · APEDA · MPEDA

Environmental and NABL labs

Environmental testing laboratories that run nitrogen evaporation as part of pesticide residue or water analysis workflows benefit from the N2 Genie’s uninterrupted supply — no interruptions to accredited test methods.

Environmental · NABL · APEDA

Oil, gas and material science

Blanketing, purging, and inert atmosphere applications in oil, gas, and material science testing laboratories — where a dedicated on-site nitrogen source is more reliable and cost-effective than cylinder logistics at scale.

Frequently asked questions

Nitrogen Generator questions answered

PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) separates nitrogen from oxygen using two towers filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Compressed air is fed into the on-line tower; oxygen is absorbed into the CMS while nitrogen passes through. Once the CMS is saturated, the system automatically switches to the second tower, and the first tower regenerates by venting the absorbed gases. The result is a continuous, uninterrupted nitrogen supply — without any consumable gas or liquid nitrogen.

The N2 Genie-1 (100–300 LPM) is the right choice for a single nitrogen evaporator, a speX SPE system, or a single LC-MS instrument. The N2 Genie-2 (300–600 LPM) suits laboratories running multiple instruments simultaneously, or a single high-consumption application such as a large Bio-eVap bank or a MAP food packaging line. If you are unsure, describe your instruments and daily usage to our team and we will recommend the right model.

The N2 Genie connects to a compressed air supply — either an existing laboratory air line or a dedicated air compressor. Compressor specifications differ between the N2 Genie-1 and N2 Genie-2 models. Takahe will advise on the exact compressed air flow and pressure requirements at the time of enquiry, and can recommend suitable compressors if a dedicated unit is needed.

The standard N2 Genie output is >96% purity at <100–300 ppm moisture and <0.01μ particulates. This is suitable for most nitrogen evaporation, SPE, and food packaging applications. For LC-MS nebulisation and curtain gas, purity requirements vary by instrument manufacturer; Takahe recommends confirming the required specification with the instrument manufacturer and discussing with our team whether a higher-purity configuration is needed for your application.

Payback period depends on current nitrogen consumption, local cylinder rental and refill costs, and the frequency of procurement activity. Most laboratories with a nitrogen evaporator running daily report that the N2 Genie pays back within six to twelve months — after which the nitrogen supply is effectively free. The eliminated costs include cylinder rental, refill charges, procurement staff time, and the safety overhead of managing high-pressure cylinders in a working laboratory.

The N2 Genie is designed for low-maintenance operation. Filters need to be changed once every six to twelve months depending on usage — the built-in service indicator alerts the user when a filter change is due. The CMS itself does not require replacement under normal operating conditions. The automatic standby mode reduces compressor wear when the laboratory is not in use, further extending service intervals. Takahe provides after-sales support from its Navi Mumbai team.

The N2 Genie-1 is typically ex-stock or available within 2–3 weeks for special configurations. The N2 Genie-2 lead time depends on configuration, including receiver tank requirements. Both models are delivered as complete, ready-to-connect systems — installation involves connecting to the compressed air supply, which most laboratories can complete within a day. Takahe’s team can advise on site requirements and support installation.
